Advanced Waste(water) Treatment

Our team investigates the key factors that determine the removal and transport of pollutants, their biotransformation products and dissolved organic matter in porous media and biofilm-based systems. Our goal is to develop sustainable solutions for water management – from advanced wastewater treatment to safe and resilient water reuse.
Research interests
- Investigations of microbial and physical interactions in porous media systems (e.g. GAC and sand filters, bank filtration) and their influence on the removal of pollutants, their biotransformation products and dissolved organic substances.
- Characterisation and targeted composition of microbial communities to promote biotransformation, combined with experimental and computer-aided methods.
- Design and optimisation of hybrid biophysical processes to improve efficiency, resilience and sustainability in wastewater treatment and water reuse.
