Sensor Data Platform of the SensorLab
Automated sensor integration, data processing and monitoring for environmental research
Overview
Maia is the data platform of the SensorLab at Eawag. It handles the entire journey of sensor data – from field collection through decoding and quality control to delivery for analysis. The SensorLab operates Maia as a service for research: scientists can focus on analysing their data without having to manage technical infrastructure.
What Maia Does
Sensor Integration
- Maia supports over 30 sensor types from various manufacturers. New sensor types can be integrated into the platform within a few hours. Data enters the system automatically via different pathways – whether through LoRaWAN radio, MQTT, REST interfaces, PLCs or file upload.
Data Processing
- A multi-stage processing pipeline ensures that raw data is automatically decoded, normalised and prepared. Researchers can access raw data, decoded values or quality-checked measurements depending on their needs.
Monitoring and Operations
- The SensorLab monitors the status of all connected sensors and the entire data processing chain. Automatic alerts are triggered in case of outages, data gaps or quality issues – ensuring consistently high data quality.
Access for Researchers
- Through a modern web interface and a standardised API, researchers can view, visualise and download their sensor data for further analysis.
Sensor Data Platform of the SensorLab
Background
Maia is the successor to the former SWW Datapool and was designed from the ground up as a modern, scalable platform. Its architecture is based on microservices – independent, specialised services that each handle one task in the data processing chain. This makes the system robust, maintainable and extensible.
Background
Maia as a SensorLab Service
The SensorLab of the Urban Water Management department (SWW) operates Maia as a central service for research at Eawag. The service includes:
- Integration of new sensor types and data sources
- Operation and maintenance of the entire data infrastructure
- Monitoring of sensors and data quality
- Support for data connectivity in research projects
- Data security and backup
This comprehensive service allows researchers to fully focus on their scientific work – the technology runs seamlessly in the background.
