EStreams

Large-sample hydrology datasets have greatly advanced scientific research, but in Europe, only a few such datasets exist, leaving much of the available data untapped. We introduce EStreams, a comprehensive dataset that includes hydro-climatic variables, landscape descriptors, and a catalogue of stream records for 17,130 European catchments. Covering up to 120 years, EStreams provides streamflow indices, catchment-level hydro-climatic data, and landscape features like topography, soils, geology, vegetation, and land cover.

The dataset also offers detailed descriptions, allowing users to directly access streamflow data, bypassing challenges like data redistribution policies, language differences, and complex data portals. EStreams comes with Python scripts for retrieving, processing, and updating data, ensuring it remains current as new information becomes available. Our aim is to expand large-sample datasets and enhance the integration of hydro-climatic and landscape data across Europe. As a follow-up we just launched our first version of the EStreams website (www.estreams.eawag.ch). With this website, users can easily find streamflow data directly from their respective data providers in a user-friendly, simple, and clean way. You no longer need to download the entire EStreams file just to check whether it contains the information you’re looking for—you can use the website’s capabilities to determine that beforehand. Additionally, if you are interested on a single basin, you can easily download the csv for this specific location.

         ting to significant scientific advances. However, in Europe, only a few such
          datasets have been published, capturing only a fraction of the wealth of in
         formation from national data providers in terms of available spatial density
          and temporal extent. We present “EStreams”, an extensive dataset of hyd
         ro-climatic variables and landscape descriptors and a catalogue of openly av
         ailable stream records for 17,130 European catchments. Spanning up to 120 ye
         ars, the dataset includes streamflow indices, catchment-aggregated hydro-cli
         matic signatures and landscape attributes (topography, soils, geology, veget
         ation and landcover). The catalogue provides detailed descriptions that allo
         w users to directly access streamflow data sources, overcoming challenges re
         lated to data redistribution policies, language barriers and varied data por
         tal structures. EStreams also provides Python scripts for data retrieval, ag
         gregation and processing, making it dynamic in contrast to static datasets.
         This approach enables users to update their data as new records become avail
         able. Our goal is to extend current large-sample datasets and further integr
         ate hydro-climatic and landscape data across Europe.
