Membrane treatment has developed from an emerging to a well-established technology in the last decade. Nevertheless, fouling remains the major problem in this sector. The key to minimizing this phenomenon is to obtain a mechanistic understanding of it.<br />This thesis investigates the fouling mechanisms occurring during ultrafiltration, the main membrane application used in Switzerland. The focus is on fouling by natural organic matter, known as the main foulant, by particles and on the impact of calcium as a fouling factor. Moreover, the consequences of fouling for the retention of micropollutants were also studied. The main contribution of this thesis is to investigate the role played by interactions between foulants of <em>different </em>types for the phenomenon. [...]<br /><br />Die Entwicklung und die Verbreitung von Membranverfahren in den letzten Jahren stellen einen wichtigen Meilenstein in der Entwicklung der Trinkwasseraufbereitung dar. In der Schweiz ist die Ultrafiltration (UF) die am häufigsten zur Trinkwasseraufbereitung angewendete Membrantechnik. Das Hauptproblem dieser noch jungen Technologie ist noch immer das Fouling der Membrane, welches die Prozessleistung merklich vermindern kann. Der Schlüssel zu einem optimalen Umgang mit dem Fouling liegt in einem verbesserten mechanistischen Verständnis dieses Phänomens.<br />Der Schwerpunkt dieser Dissertation soll Antworten auf die Fragen geben, warum es zum Membranfouling kommt. Hierzu werden die Mechanismen des Membranfouling während der UF von Trinkwasser untersucht. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf Substanzen des natürlichen organischen Materials (NOM), welche bekannt sind dafür, hauptsächlich für das Fouling verantwortlich zu sein. Das Fouling durch die Huminstoffe und die Polysaccharide alleine und in Kombination mit Partikeln wie auch der Einfluss des Calciums werden untersucht und. Des Weiteren werden die Folgen des Fouling auf den Rückhalt von Mikroverunreinigungen analysiert. Der bedeutendste wissenschaftliche Beitrag dieser Arbeit liegt in der Erkenntnisgewinnung über die gegenseitige Beeinflussung von Foulants <em>verschiedenen </em>Typs und deren Auswirkungen auf die Membranleistung. Understanding the Sun's magnetic activity is important because of its impact on the Earth's environment. The sunspot record since 1610 shows irregular 11-year cycles of activity; they are modulated on longer timescales and were interrupted by the Maunder minimum in the 17th century. Recent activity has been abnormally high for at least 8 cycles: is this grand maximum likely to terminate soon or even to be followed by another (Maunder-like) grand minimum? Cosmogenic radionuclides stored in natural archives such as ¹⁰Be in ice cores and ¹⁴C in tree rings have proven to be very useful in reconstructing past solar activity, and changes in the geomagnetic field intensity over many millennia. At present, this is the only method to extend the records of solar activity proxies beyond the instrumental period. To answer the previous questions we use, as a measure of the Sun's open magnetic field, a composite record of the solar modulation potential <em>ϕ, </em>reconstructed principally from the record of cosmogenic ¹⁰Be abundances in the GRIP ice core from Greenland. Die gemessene Anzahl der Sonneflecken seit 1610 weist einen unregelmässigen 11-Jahreszyklus auf. Dieser Zyklus variiert auch auf langeren Zeitskalen und war sogar im 17. Jahrhundert wahrend des Maunder-Minimums unterbrochen. Hingegen war die Sonnenaktivität wahrend der letzten acht 11-Jahreszyklen aussergewöhnlich hoch. Es stellen sich also die Fragen: Wann wird die momentane Phase hoher Aktivität zu Ende gehen? Was passiert danach? Kommt im Anschluss ein Maunder Minimum?<br />Kosmogene Radionuklide, gespeichert in natürlichen Archiven wie, z.B., ¹⁰Be in Eisbohrkernen und ¹⁴C in Baumringen, konnen verwendet werden, um einerseits die Vergangenheit der letzten Jahrtausende der Sonnenaktivität und andererseits der Erdmagnetfeldstarke zu rekonstruieren. Zur Zeit ist das die einzige verfügbare Methode, um direkte Proxydaten (wie Sonnenflecken) der Sonnenaktivität vor der Beobachtungsperiode zu erweitern. Um die obigen Fragen zu beantworten, wird in dieser Arbeit als Proxy für das offene solare Magnetfeld ein Datensatz des solaren Modulationspotentials verwendet. Dieser Datensatz wurde aus¹⁰Be Konzentrationen gemessen im GRIP Eisbohrkern ermittelt. [...]

This work focuses on the use of noble gases as tracers for the transport of solutes and fluids in unconsolidated sediments of lakes and oceans. Atmospheric noble gases enter the water body of lakes and oceans by gas exchange at the air/water interface according to the local pressure, temperature and salinity conditions. During the deposition of sediment particles at the bottom of water bodies a part of the water (and the noble-gas species dissolved in it) overlying the sediment/water boundary is “trapped” in the pore space of the growing sediment column. As noble gases are in general not affected by any biogeochemical processes, deviations from the expected atmospheric equilibrium concentrations can be used to identify the relevant physical processes that affect the abundance of solutes in the sediment column. The characterization of the solute transport in the sediment column is necessary to understand the temporal evolution of concentration signals generated by, for example, climate forcing or fluids emanating from geochemical reservoirs located below the sediments. Atmosphärische Edelgase werden durch Gasaustausch an der Grenzfläche Luft/Wasser abhängig von den lokalen Druck- und Temperaturbedingungen und der Salinität in die Wasserkörper von Seen und Ozeanen eingebracht. Während der Sedimentation am Grund wird ein Teil des sich dort befindenden Wassers (und damit die im Wasser gelösten Edelgase) im Porenraum der wachsenden Sedimentsäule “eingefangen”. Generell werden Edelgaskonzentrationen nicht durch biogeochemische Prozesse beeinflusst. Daher können Abweichungen von den erwarteten atmosphärischen Gleichgewichtskonzentrationen verwendet werden, um relevante physikalische Transportprozesse zu identifizieren, welche die Verteilung von gelösten Stoffen in der Sedimentsäule beeinflussen. Die Charakterisierung des Stofftransportes in der Sedimentsäule ist nötig, um die zeitliche Entwicklung von Konzentrationssignalen zu verstehen, die z.B. durch klimatische Veränderungen oder durch den Eintrag von Fluiden aus tieferen geochemischen Reservoirs verursacht werden. Lake Kivu is situated in the East African Rift Valley near the equator at an elevation of 1463 m. The lake is bordered by two active volcanoes to the north and is shared between the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This large lake has a surface of 2370 km², a maximum depth of 485 m and a total volume of 580 km³. It has an unusual permanent density stratification, which is sustained by salty, warm and CO₂-rich subaquatic springs. In the permanently stratified anoxic hypolimnion, exceptional amounts of CH₄ (~60 km³) and CO₂ (~300 km³) have been accumulating over hundreds of years. Nowadays, gas saturation reaches up to ~55%. It has been estimated that CH₄ concentrations increased by up to 15% between 1974 and 2004, and that 100% saturation could be approached around the year 2100. A potential gas eruption could have catastrophic consequences for this densely populated region. CH₄ extraction could be an attractive solution providing electricity for the bordering countries and reducing the risk of eruption. Quantifying the CH₄ production rate is, therefore, important to evaluate the risk of outgassing and efficiently use the CH₄ as an energy source. Une éruption potentielle des gaz aurait des conséquences catastrophiques pour cette région densément peuplée. L’exploitation du CH₄ constituerait une solution doublement intéressante tant par l’électricité fournie à chaque pays que par la réduction des risques. The aim of this thesis was to recover and to interpret high-quality sediment cores spanning multiple glacial to interglacial cycles from Lake Petén Itzá (16°55’N, 89°50’W) in Petén, Guatemala, the deepest (max. water depth &gt; 160 m) and largest (area ∼100 km²) lake in the Neotropical lowlands of Central America. Its sediment record was drilled in spring 2006 within a project of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). In this thesis, the entire sediment record from Lake Petén Itzá is described and interpreted in detail to explore the sedimentological history of Lake Petén Itzá and the related Late Quaternary palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment of the lowland of Mesoamerica.<br />The sediment record of Lake Petén Itzá extends back to &gt;200’000 cal yrs BP and consists mainly of alternating clay, gypsum and carbonate units. Clay units are associated with times of high detrital input and high lake-level stands (i.e. wet climate), gypsum units are related to chemical precipitation during low lake-level stands (i.e. dry climate), whereas carbonate units are related either to detrital input (reflecting high runoff, i.e. wet climate) or authigenic carbonate precipitation (reflecting rather low lake levels, i.e. dry climate), respectively. Most of these lithologic units are laterally trackable throughout the basin along stratigraphic boundaries that can be mapped on seismic profiles as reflections, suggesting the use of the lithology as a valuable proxy to infer palaeoenvironmental changes on a regional scale. [...]<br /><br />Ziel dieser Doktorarbeit war mit Hilfe von Sedimentkernen aus dem Lake Petén Itzá (16°55’N, 89°50’W) in Petén, Guatemala, hochauflösende Klimainformationen aus mehreren Glazial- und Interglazialzyklen zu erhalten und zu interpretieren. Dieser See ist einer der tiefsten (max. Wassertiefe &gt;160 m) und grössten (Fläche ∼100 km²) Seen Zentralamerikas. Dazu wurden im Frühling 2006 im Rahmen eines ICDP (International Continental Drilling Program)-Projekts lange Sedimentkerne aus dem Lake Petén Itzá gebohrt. In dieser Arbeit wird das komplette Sedimentarchiv dieser gewonnen Kerne beschrieben und interpretiert. Auf diese Weise soll die vollständige Sedimentationsgeschichte vom Lake Petén Itzá und die damit zusammenhängenden spätquartären Klima- und Umweltbedingungen Mittelamerikas rekonstruiert werden.<br />Das Sedimentarchiv vom Lake Petén Itzá beinhaltet Informationen über einen Zeitraum von mehr als 200’000 Jahren. Die Sedimente bestehen hauptsächlich aus einer Wechsellagerung von Ton-, Gips- und Karbonatschichten. Dabei bedeuten Tonschichten Zeiten mit einem hohen detritischen Input, einem hohen Seespiegelstand und feuchtem Klima. Im Gegensatz dazu weisen Gipsschichten auf Zeiten mit hoher chemischer Ausfällung aufgrund von übersättigten Wasserbedingungen durch einen tiefen Seespiegelstand und trockenem Klima hin. Karbonate sind nicht so eindeutig zu interpretieren, da sie entweder detritischer oder chemischer Herkunft sind und deshalb feuchte oder trockenere Klimabedingungen repräsentieren können. Viele dieser Gips-, Ton- oder Karbonatpakete können durch das ganze Seebecken entlang von seismischen und lithologischen Grenzen verbunden werden. Diese Beobachtung zeigt, dass die Lithologie als sensitiver Indikator für die Rekonstruktion von Seespiegelschwankungen und vergangener Klimaänderungen benutzt werden kann. [...]

Total solar irradiance has been directly and continuously measured from space since 1978. Prior to this time there is no accurate information of total solar irradiance and, therefore, must be reconstructed. This thesis addresses the problem of reconstructing the total solar irradiance for the past about 10,000 years by using data of the cosmogenic radionuclide ¹⁰Be measured in polar ice cores. ¹⁰Be is produced in the Earth’s atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with the atmospheric gases. The changing solar activity leads to a variation of cosmic rays. The cosmic rays coming from the milky way penetrate into the heliosphere where they react with the solar wind. Cosmic rays are charged particles and, therefore, get deflected by the magnetic field, which is connected with the solar wind. The solar wind is disturbed in times of high solar activity leading to a decrease in the intensity of cosmic rays, which can travel to Earth. Another influence on the cosmic rays has the geomagnetic field. Thus, the higher the solar activity or the stronger the geomagnetic field, the less cosmic rays reach the Earth’s atmosphere and the less ¹⁰Be is produced. After production ¹⁰Be attaches to aerosols and is removed from the atmosphere to the ground. A part comes to polar regions where is gets archived in ice. Für die Zeit davor existieren keine verlässlichen Informationen über die totale solare Irradianz, und sie kann nur durch Rekonstruktion bestimmt werden. Das Ziel dieser Dissertation ist die Rekonstruktion der totalen solaren Irradianz für die letzten etwa 10’000 Jahre unter Berücksichtigung von Daten des kosmogenen Radionuklids ¹⁰Be aus polaren Eisbohrkernen.¹⁰Be wird durch Interaktion kosmischer Strahlung mit Gasen in der Erdatmosphäre produziert. Die schwankende Sonnenaktivität führt zu einer Variation der kosmischen Strahlung. Die aus der Milchstrasse kommende kosmische Strahlung dringt in das Sonnensystem ein, wo sie auf den von der Sonne wegströmenden Sonnenwind trifft. Die kosmische Strahlung besteht aus geladenen Teilchen und wird deswegen vom Magnetfeld im Sonnenwind abgelenkt. Zu Zeiten hoher Sonnenaktivität ist der Sonnenwind stark gestört, was zur Folge hat, dass weniger kosmische Strahlung bis zur Erde gelangt als bei niedriger Sonnenaktivität. Einen weiteren Einfluss auf die kosmischen Strahlung hat das Erdmagnetfeld. Es gilt: je höher die Sonnenaktiviät bzw. je stärker das Erdmagnetfeld, desto weniger kosmische Strahlung kann in die Erdatmosphäre eindringen wo folglich weniger ¹⁰Be produziert wird. Nach der Produktion bindet sich ¹⁰Be an Aerosole, mit denen es zu Boden transportiert wird. Ein Teil des ¹⁰Be gelangt in polare Gebiete und wird im Eis archiviert. [...]

Sulfonamide antimicrobials (SAs) are intensively used in veterinary medicine worldwide and reach agricultural soils via the application of liquid manure and the excretions of grazing livestock. Reasonable concerns exist that the use of SAs promotes the selection of SA resistance genes resulting in a loss of their therapeutic potency and has adverse effects on soil microbial community structures and functions. Risk assessment thus requires a thorough understanding of the processes controlling the SA concentrations which are freely available for soil bacteria (SA bioaccessibility) and the processes controlling the SA uptake by bacteria which determine their effects (SA bioavailability). The overall goal of this PhD thesis was to contribute (i) to the understanding of processes controlling SA bioaccessibility and bioavailability and (ii) to the development of a SA specific marker to measure SA uptake and effect in bacteria. Der intensive Einsatz von SAs könnte eine vermehrte Selektion von SAResistenzgenen in der Umwelt zur Folge haben, was zum Verlust der antibakteriellen Wirksamkeit der SAs beitragen kann. Weiterhin besteht das Risiko negativer Auswirkungen auf Struktur und Funktionen von mikrobiellen Bodengemeinschaften. Entscheidend für die Risikobeurteilung von SAs ist ein weitreichendes Verständnis der zugrunde liegenden Prozesse, welche die für Bakterien frei verfügbare SA-Konzentration (biologische Zugänglichkeit) bestimmen und die bakterielle Aufnahme und damit den Effekt von SAs auf Bakterien (Bioverfügbarkeit) beeinflussen. Das übergeordnete Ziel dieser Doktorarbeit war es daher, die Prozesse der biologischen Zugänglichkeit und Bioverfügbarkeit von SAs besser zu verstehen und die Grundlagen für die Entwicklung eines SA-spezifischen Markers für die Aufnahme und den Effekt von SAs in Bakterien zu legen. Due to the rapid increase of trace gas concentrations (CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O) since the middle of the 18th century and the predicted temperature increase of 1.6 to 6.4 °C suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) efforts to contain greenhouse gas emissions are inevitable. One possible way would be the use of low-emission energy sources and renewable resources, for example hydropower. In contrast to the assumption, hydropower is not a source for greenhouse gases, studies in boreal and tropical reservoirs could show that the flooding of large amounts of organic carbon in and above the soil caused the production and emission of large amounts CO₂ and CH₄. After high emissions in the first few years after flooding, emissions level off after approximately 20 years to an emission level close to natural lakes. Entgegen der Annahme, es handele sich hierbei um eine Art der Elektrizitätsproduktion, die ohne den Ausstoss von Treibhausgasen auskommt ergaben Untersuchungen in tropischen und borealen Stauseen, dass durch die Überschwemmung enormer Mengen organischen Kohlenstoffes über und in Böden grosse Mengen von CO₂ und CH₄ produziert und emittiert werden. Nach zu Beginn hohem Ausstoss dieser beiden Treibhausgase pendeln sich die Emissionen nach etwa 20 Jahren auf ähnlichem Niveau wie dem natürlicher Seen ein. [...]

Field studies have shown that diffuse herbicide losses from agricultural fields to surface waters often originate from only a limited part of a given catchment. These critical source areas (CSA) are characterized by the occurrence of fast flow processes like surface runoff or macropore flow to tile drains. A reliable identification of CSA offers promising options for mitigation measures to reduce diffuse herbicide pollution of surface waters.<br />We tested the predictability of locating CSA with the physically based hydrological water balance model SMDR (Soil Moisture Distribution &amp; Routing). The study area was a small agricultural catchment in Switzerland in which herbicide transport to surface waters had been investigated in field studies and a large spatial variability of herbicide losses was detected. SMDR was adapted to the local conditions by implementing a model for artificial drains and considering the connectivity to the stream. [...]<br /><br />Felduntersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass diffuse Herbizidabschwemmungen aus der Landwirtschaft in Oberflächengewässer nur von einem kleinen Bereich des Einzugsgebiets stammen. Diese so genannten Risikogebiete sind dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass dort schnelle hydrologische Abflussprozesse wie Oberflächenabfluss und Makroporenfluss zum Drainagensystem auftreten können. Eine zuverlässige Identifizierung solcher Risikoflächen würde es erlauben, effektive Massnahmen zur Reduzierung von Herbizideinträgen in die Oberflächengewässer umzusetzen.<br />Wir haben untersucht, inwiefern solche Risikogebiete mit einem physikalisch basierten hydrologischen Wasserbilanzmodell (Soil Moisture Distribution &amp; Routing) vorhergesagt werden können. Unser Untersuchungsgebiet war ein kleines landwirtschaftliches Einzugsgebiet in der Schweiz, in dem der Herbizidtransport in das Oberflächengewässer vorgängig in Feldstudien untersucht worden war. Dabei zeigten diese Untersuchungen eine grosse räumliche Variabilität der Herbizidabschwemmung. Um die lokalen Begebenheiten zu berücksichtigen, haben wir das hydrologische Modell erweitert und zusätzlich den Abfluss durch das Drainagesystem und die Konnektivität zum Oberflächengewässer explizit berücksichtigt. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, global mean surface temperature has risen by 0.74°C ± 0.18°C. This increase is largely attributed to the anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂). A further temperature increase of 1.4 to 6.4 °C has been predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to occur by the end of this century. Additionally, extensive uses of fertilizers, land-use changes and emission of nitrous oxide (N₂O) have seriously altered the global nitrogen cycle. These global environmental changes may have serious impacts on ecosystems, but the nature and magnitude of these impacts are not well understood at present.<br />Aim of this dissertation was to assess effects of elevated temperature and nitrogen enrichment on important components of the carbon cycle in ecosystems, specifically on the decomposition of plant litter and whole-ecosystem metabolism in a freshwater wetland. To this end, a set of heatable enclosures was set up in a littoral marsh of a lake. Half of the enclosures were heated to a target temperature of 4°C above ambient water temperature, whereas the other half served as unheated controls. Furthermore, half of the heated and half of the unheated enclosures where monthly fertilized with nitrate to an initial concentration five times higher than in the marsh. Rates of plant litter decomposition and ecosystem metabolism were determined in these enclosures in three different experiments. [...]<br /><br />Seit Beginn der Industriellen Revolution im 18. Darüber hinaus hat der intensive Einsatz von Stickstoffdüngern, Agrarwirtschaft und die Emission von N₂O den globalen Stickstoff-Zyklus stark verändert. Diese globalen Umweltveränderungen haben starke Einflüsse auf das Ökosystem; die Art und das Ausmaß der Veränderungen sind nach dem derzeitigen Stand der Wissenschaft noch nicht abzuschätzen.<br />Ziel dieser Doktorarbeit war die Untersuchung der Einflüsse von erhöhter Temperatur und Stickstoffdeposition auf wichtige Teile des Kohlenstoff-Zyklusses, speziell den Abbau von Blattmaterial und ökosystemaren Metabolismus in Feuchtgebieten. Für diese Untersuchungen wurden in einem Schilfgebiet künstlich heizbare Mesokosmen installiert. Die Hälfte der Mesokosmen wurde so beheizt, dass die Wassertemperatur in ihnen jeweils 4°C höher als die umgebende Seetemperatur war, die andere Hälfte diente als ungeheizte Kontrollen. Zusätzlich wurde jeweils die Hälfte der geheizten und ungeheizten Mesokosmen monatlich mit Nitrat gedüngt. Die Zielkonzentration in den gedüngten Mesokosmen war fünfmal höher als die Nitratkonzentration im See. Drei verschiedene Experimente zum Abbau von Blattmaterial und Metabolismus wurden in diesen Mesokosmen durchgeführt. [...]

The consumption of untreated source water is still among the major causes of diarrhea and child mortality in low income countries. Roughly one third of infant mortality is caused by such waterborne diarrheal diseases (WHO, 2007). To combat this preventable global burden, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have called for halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.<br />The promotion of household water treatment and safe storage systems (HWTS) represents an effective and realistic method to accelerate health gains to those without reliable access to safe drinking water (WHO, 2007). A variety of technologies for water treatment at household level exist and many are widely used in different parts of the world (e.g. boiling, filtering, chlorination, solar disinfection etc.). According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2008), solar water disinfection (SODIS) is one of the most promising and accessible technologies for household water treatment. The method consists of exposing water-filled, transparent plastic bottles to full sunlight for about one day. Experiences of efforts promoting SODIS or other HWTS, however, have shown that the uptake of treatment techniques has often been slow and not initiated through information only. Consequently, investigations are needed on people's motivations to use HWTS, to understand how households can be encouraged to take up these new methods, and how their behavior can be changed sustainably (Zwane &amp; Kremer, 2007). The reactions of ozone (O₃) and hydroxyl radical (^•OH) with each of fourteen clinicaluse antibacterial compounds (from nine different structural families) and one general-use, non-clinical antibacterial compound (i.e., the biocide triclosan, or TRI) that are frequently detected in municipal wastewaters were characterized by a wide array of chemical and microbiological analytical techniques, to determine: (a) the kinetics of model compound oxidation by O₃ and ^•OH - via measurement of second-order rate constants for each reaction, at various pH conditions, (b) at which specific structural moieties within the antibacterial compounds direct reactions with O₃ take place, and how these reaction sites correlate with structural moieties known to play a role in each antibacterial class’ target-specific modes of antibacterial activity, (c) whether reactions with each oxidant result in elimination of the parent antibacterial compounds’ biological activities, (d) if not, the identities and relative potencies of transformation products generated during reaction with either O₃ or ^•OH that retain appreciable antibacterial acivity, (e) the kinetics with which such biologically-active products are oxidized by O₃ and ^•OH, and (f) ultimately, whether application of O₃-based oxidative treatment to municipal wastewater matrixes will be likely to result in rapid, efficient elimination of the antibacterial activities of the model compounds investigated here, as well as of structurally-analogous compounds from the same antibacterial structural classes. Cadmium is a non-essential trace metal, with elevated concentrations in many aquatic systems. The bioavailability of cadmium as well as of other nonessential and essential metals depends not only on their concentrations but is also strongly dependent upon chemical speciation. Models for the bioavailability of metals have been developed in order to predict uptake and effects. Equilibrium-based models, i.e. the free ion activity model (FIAM) and the biotic ligand model (BLM) have been confirmed in various laboratory studies with algae in defined media. Exceptions which have been found to these models, include the uptake of small hydrophobic metal-complexes and the control of bioaccumulation by labile metal species. The latter case highlights the importance of including the dynamic aspects of metal complexes in nonequilibrium based models, by considering diffusion and uptake fluxes of such complexes. We use meteorological data from two automatic weather stations (AWS) on Juncal Norte Glacier, central Chile, to investigate the glacier–climate interaction and to test ablation models of different complexity. The semi-arid Central Andes are characterized by dry summers, with precipitation close to zero, low relative humidity and intense solar radiation. We show that katabatic forcing is dominant both on the glacier tongue and in the fore field, and that low humidity and absence of clouds cause strong radiative cooling of the glacier surface. Surface albedo is basically constant for snow and ice, because of the scarcity of solid precipitation. The energy balance of the glacier is simulated for a 2-month period in austral summer using two models of different complexity, which differ in the inclusion of the heat conduction flux into the snowpack and in the parameterization of the incoming longwave radiation. Net shortwave radiation is the dominant component of the energy balance. The sensible heat flux is always positive, while both the net longwave radiation and latent heat flux are negative. neglecting the subsurface heat flux and corresponding variations in surface temperature leads to an overestimation of ablation of 2% over a total of 3695 mm water equivalent (w.e.) at the end of the season. Correct modelling of incoming longwave radiation is crucial, and we suggest that parameterizations based on vapour pressure and air temperature should be used rather than on computed cloud amount. We also used an enhanced temperature-index model incorporating the shortwave radiation flux, which has two empirical parameters. We apply it both with values of parameters obtained for Alpine glaciers and recalibrated on Juncal Norte. The model recalibrated against the correct energy balance simulations performs very well. The model parameters respond to the meteorological conditions typical of this climatic setting.

N-heterocyclic compounds are known pollutants at tar oil contaminated sites. Here we report the degradation of methyl-, and hydroxy-methyl-substituted quinolines under nitrate-, sulfate- and iron-reducing conditions in microcosms with aquifer material of a former coke manufacturing site. Comparison of degradation potential and rate under different redox conditions revealed highest degradation activities under sulfate-reducing conditions, the prevailing conditions in the field. Metabolites of methylquinolines, with the exception of 2-methylquinolines, were formed in high amounts in the microcosms and could be identified by ¹H NMR spectroscopy as 2(1H)-quinolinone analogues. 4-Methyl-, 6-methyl-, and 7-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinolinone, the hydrogenated metabolites in the degradation of quinoline compounds, were identified by high resolution LC-MS. Metabolites of methylquinolines showed persistence, although for the first time a transformation of 4-methylquinoline and its metabolite 4-methyl-2(1H)-quinolinone is described. The relevance of the identified metabolites is supported by the detection of a broad spectrum of them in groundwater of the field site using LC-NMR technique, LC-NMR allowed the differentiation of isomers and identification without reference compounds. A variety of methylated 2(1H)-quinolinones, as well as methyl-3,4-dihydro-2(1H)-quinolinone isomers were not identified before in groundwater.

An advanced approach is presented for identifying and characterizing biopolymers; of natural organic matter (NOM) in water samples. it involves a simple method encompassing the ratio of peak heights of high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) chromatograms based on ultraviolet absorbance (UVA) detection at 210 nm and 254 nm. The HPSEC system eliminates inorganic interferences by separation and makes it possible to obtain ratio values associated with organic components as a function of molecular weight (MW). Certain biopolymers show a UVA₂₁₀/UVA₂₅₄) because they contain different distinctive ultraviolet absorbance ratio index (URI, compositional proportions of UV-absorbing functional groups and sp²-hybridized carbon. URI values were found to be the lowest for humic acids (1.59 for a humic acid, highest aromaticity), intermediate for fulvic acids (1.88 for a fulvic acid, intermediate aromaticity), and highest for proteins (13.5 for BSA, lowest aromaticity). URI increases with the degree of eutrophication of natural waters by the increase of microbially derived components that have a high functional group proportion with a low sp²-hybridized carbon, and increases with oxidation (e.g. ozonation) by the cleavage of unsaturated bonds (decrease in unsaturated bonds and increase in functional group proportions).<br />A particular functional group displays its characteristic chemical behaviour when it is present in a compound. The chemical behaviour of NOM is highly related to its functional groups. The concept of URI considers the main functional groups of NOM and can act as an important water quality index. it may be used as a surrogate for assessing the effects of oxidation of NOM. The method is simple and can be easily applied to characterization of bulk water samples.

There is an increasing interest in modeling groundwater contamination, particularly geogenic contaminant, on a large scale both from the researcher’s as well as policy maker’s point of view. However, modeling large scale groundwater contamination is very challenging due to the incomplete understanding of geochemical and hydrological processes in the aquifer. Despite the incomplete understanding, existing knowledge provides sufficient hints to develop predictive models of geogenic contamination. In this study we used a global database of fluoride measurements (>60,000 entities), as well as global-scale information relevant to soil, geology, elevation, climate, and hydrology to evaluate several hybrid methods. The hybrid methods were developed by combining two classification techniques including classification tree (CART) and knowledge based clustering (KBC) and three predictive techniques including multiple linear regression (MLR), adoptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and logistic regression (LR). The results indicated that combination of classification techniques and nonlinear predictive method (ANFIS and LR) were more reliable than others and provided a better prediction capability. Among the different hybrid procedures, combination of KBC-ANFIS and also CART - ANFIS resulted in larger sensitivities and smaller false negative rates for both training and test data sets. However, as the CART classifier is very unstable and very sensitive to re-sampling, the combination of KBC and ANFIS or LR is preferred.

Environmental toxicologists, chemists and social scientists have identified three priorities for research into the impact of engineered nanoparticles on the environment.

<i>Introduction</i>. The International Association for Danube Research (IAD), a legal association (Verein) according to Austrian law, presently consists of 13 member countries and 12 expert groups covering all water-relevant scientific disciplines. IAD, founded in 1956, represents a traditional and significant stakeholder in the Danube River Basin, fulfilling an important task towards an integrative water and river basin management requested by the EU Water Framework Directive.<br/> <i>Discussion</i>. IAD, stretching between basic and applied research, adapted its strategy after the major political changes in 1989. IAD fosters transdisciplinary and trans-boundary projects to support integrative Danube River protection in line with the governmental International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in which IAD has had observer status since 1998. Recent scientific outputs of IAD encompass, amongst others, a water quality map of the Danube and major tributaries, the Sturgeon Action Plan, hydromorphological mapping of the Drava, a macrophyte inventory, and a Mures River study. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of biosolids on temporal variability of physical and hydraulic properties of a calcareous soil. The biosolids was added to the soil at 0, 25, 50 and 100 Mg ha^–1. Soil physical properties including aggregate stability, bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, final infiltration rate and available water capacity were determined at 28, 85, 145, 221, 441 and 530 days after the biosolids application. The soil physical properties significantly changed in different sampling dates showing a significant temporal variation following the biosolids application. The unsaturated hydraulic properties were estimated using van Genuchten (1980) and Mualem (1976) equations. Unsaturated hydraulic properties significantly change following biosolids application and sampling dates. The soil moisture characteristic and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity are key parameters in water flow and solute transport modeling processes. Thus, the temporal variations in soil physical and hydraulic properties should be considered in solute transport modeling and studies following biosolids application.

This chapter addresses the main issues that are worth considering when using environmental criteria in a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) context and provides some guidance for a proper and efficient use of environmental criteria in a MCDM context. Among the main issues considered in this chapter, we can mention the definition and representation of criteria, their weighting, and their selection. The relation of criterion to other notions such as attribute, objective, goal, and indicator is also explained. Regarding the environmental criteria, we emphasize their main characteristics and indicate how these characteristics can support the users in selecting appropriate MCDM methods. An illustrative example about the selection of the best scenario for the treatment of a vacuum cleaner at the end of its life cycle is given. It shows the type of reverse supply chain problems in which environmental criteria can be used to evaluate and compare alternatives.

Der vorliegende Abschlussbericht des Micropoll-Teilprojektes zur Elimination von Spurenstoffen aus kommunalem Abwasser mittels Pulveraktivkohle (PAK) fasst die zentralen Ergebnisse der Pilotierungen und Einzelversuche aller Projektphasen der letzten drei Jahren zusammen. Hauptziel des Projektes war es durch den Betrieb von halbtechnischen Pilotanlagen und zielgerichteten Einzeluntersuchungen weitere Klärung und Erfahrungen zum Einsatz von Aktivkohle zur Spurenstoffelimination in der kommunalen Abwasserbehandlung zu liefern. Während der ersten Projektphase wurden im Wesentlichen Grundlagen evaluiert (1. - 2. Zwischenbericht), während in den Versuchsphasen zwei und drei empirische und praxisorientierte Untersuchungen vorgenommen wurden.

Several EU member states have yet to satisfy the stringent nutrient removal requirement of the Urban Waste Water Directive (1991) for sensitive areas. An environmental engineer working in the field of wastewater treatment is faced with increasing demands on the treatment efficiency. With the new European Water Framework Directive (EWFD, 2000/60/CE) there is a shift in paradigm from emission-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent limits to an immission-based (from the river perspective) approach. Water policies in Europe and the world have shifted towards "demand management" and therefore have to incorporate new technologies in treatment and reuse. They prime the protection of aquatic ecosystems and point towards sustainable development. As a side-effect, even small plants have to fulfill the highest effluent limits if discharging into small water bodies. If we look into North America or Australia we see a trend to extremely low effluent limits, e.g. for total nitrogen as low as 3 mg N/L for sensitive areas. Moreover, recent evidence is showing that WWTP are on the verge of a second upgrading round not only for the increase in the legislation requirements but also considering that some of the WWTP constructed in the 80's and 90's are becoming saturated because of population and industry growth. An important role is given to the WWTPs to reduce the urban contamination of rivers to very low levels and therefore nutrient removal in biological treatment has to be improved and optimized.

Silber und Nanosilber werden in vielen Produkten des täglichen Lebens als antimikrobieller Wirkstoff eingesetzt. So wird auch eine Farbprodukt für die Anwendung auf Gebäudefassa-den gegen den Befall von Mikroorganismen mit Nanosilber ausgerüstet. Dies kann durch Verwitterungsprozesse ausgewaschen werden. Zusammen mit den Abteilungen Siedlungs-wasserwirtschaft und Verfahrenstechnik der Eawag und der Abteilung Bautechnologien der Empa wurde die Auswaschung der Silberpartikel aus einer marktüblichen Fassadenfarbe untersucht. Das Ökotoxzentrum hat dabei den Fassadenablauf auf dessen ökotoxikologi-sches Potential hin untersucht. Es wurden unterschiedliche Biotests angewendet. Nebst in vivo Tests mit Gammarus fossarum und Ceriodaphnia dubia wurden Tests in Mikrotiterplat-ten durchgeführt, der Leuchtbakterientest mit Vibrio fischeri und der kombinierte Algentest mit Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. Es wurden Beregungsversuche mit Prüfkörpern durchgeführt, von denen einer mit einer na-nosilberhaltigen Farbe (nAg) und einer mit derselben Farbe, jedoch ohne Nanosilber (Refe-renz) beschichtet waren. Die, in einer ersten, simulierten Bewitterung gezogenen Proben zeigten lediglich im Ablauf des nAg-Prüfkörpers toxische Effekte. Mittels des Leuchtbakteri-entests nachgewiesene Effekte auf Vibrio fischeri zeigten sich deutlich in den ersten 2 L des nAg-Ablaufs. Der Freilandversuch zeigte, dass sowohl aus der Beschichtung des Referenz- als auch aus dem nAg-Prüfkörper ökotoxisch wirksame Substanzen ausgewaschen und in die Umwelt getragen werden. Von den angewendeten Biotests konnten mit dem chronischen Toxizitäts-test mit Ceriodaphnia dubia stark toxische Effekte und mit dem Leuchtbakterientest wie auch dem Algentest leichte, toxische Effekte detektiert werden. Der Algentest zeigte ledig-lich eine leichte Hemmung des Wachstums, die Photosynthese wurde nicht inhibiert, was darauf hindeutet, dass keine herbiziden Substanzen aus den Fassadenbeschichtungen frei-gesetzt werden. Der Gammarustest zeigte im Ablauf des nAg-Prüfkörper nach 24 h Exposi-tion Effekte auf das Verhalten der Gammariden, sowohl auf die Bewegung als auch auf die Ventilation.

Die Eutrophierung des Zugersees erreichte 1982 mit einem Phosphorgehalt von 635 t (200 mg-P m^-3) den Höhepunkt. Seither nimmt der Phosphorinhalt stetig ab. Obwohl der Rückgang zur Zeit ~14 t-P yr^-1 beträgt (~5% yr^-1), liegt die aktuelle mittlere Konzentration von Phosphor (P) im See noch immer bei ~85 mg-P m^-3. Damit ist der Zugersee nach wie vor einer der nährstoffreichsten Seen der Schweiz, obwohl offensichtlich die Belastung in den letzen 30 Jahren deutlich abgenommen hat. Zwei Gründe sind für die hohe P-Konzentration verantwortlich: (1) Die hydraulische Aufenthaltszeit beträgt ~15 Jahre, so dass die enorme Menge von P aus den 1980-er Jahren nur langsam aus dem See gespült wird. (2) Zudem ist der See unterhalb von 100 m Tiefe praktisch permanent dichtegeschichtet. Auch während der Abkühlung im Winter wird das nährstoffhaltige Tiefenwasser kaum mit dem abgereicherten Oberflächenwasser vermischt. Das enorme P-Reservoir in der Tiefe kann somit weitgehend unbehelligt und "geschützt" vor dem Kontakt mit dem Seeausfluss in der Tiefe langfristig verweilen. Aus diesem Grund, und trotz der zusätzlichen Senke für P welche die P-Nettosedimentation darstellt, beträgt die Aufenthaltszeit des P ~16 Jahre. Dass in einem See die P-Aufenthaltszeit und die hydraulische Aufenthaltszeit praktisch gleich sind, ist unüblich und eine spezielle Eigenschaft des Zugersees. (...)

Während den heissen Sommermonaten besteht im Greifensee die Gefahr eines Fischsterbens. Zur wärmsten Zeit des Jahres ist der Lebensraum der Felchen stark eingeschränkt: Einerseits wird das sauerstoffhaltige Oberflächenwasser für Felchen zu warm (&gt; ~21 °C), während das kühle Tiefenwasser - wegen der hohen Algenproduktion - ab Mitte Sommer sauerstofffrei ist. In der Folge kann die - für das Überleben der Felchen notwendige - Schicht zwischen dem (zu) warmen Oberflächenwasser und dem sauerstofflosen Tiefenwasser unter ungünstigen Umständen zu weniger als 1 m Mächtigkeit schrumpfen.<br /> Zwar hat sich die Konzentration von gelöstem anorganischen Phosphat im Greifensee in den letzten 20 Jahren von über ~120 auf ~40 mg m^-3 zurückgebildet (Moosmann et al. 2003; Matzinger et al. 2008; Matzinger et al. 2010), doch ist der See nach wie vor eutroph. Aufgrund der geringen Tiefe des Sees weitet sich die sauerstofffreie Zone im Spätsommer (August) vom Seegrund bis in ~5 m Tiefe nach oben aus. Daher kommt es trotz dem Rückgang des Phosphatgehaltes zu Zeiten maximaler Erwärmung auch heute noch zu kritischen Lebensbedingungen für Felchen. (...)

In Zusammenarbeit mit den Abteilungen SWW (Siedlungswasserwirtschaft) und Verfahrenstechnik der Eawag wurde das Abwasser einer Wäscherei untersucht. Die Wäscherei gibt dem Waschmittel Nanosilber in Form von Silberchlorid zu, um sich die antimikrobiellen Eigenschaften von Silber zu Nutze zu machen. Die Abteilung SWW und Verfahrenstechnik ermitteln dabei u. a. die Austragungsmenge und das Verhalten von Nanosilber im Abwasser. Das Oekotoxzentrum untersuchte anhand von unterschiedlichen Biotests die Toxizität des komplexen Abwassers. Im kombinierten Algentest mit der einzelligen Grünalge Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata wurden die Inhibition der Photosynthese und des Wachstums untersucht. Der Leuchtbakterientest mit dem marinen Bakterium Vibrio fischeri zeigte durch eine Hemmung der Lichtemission eine allgemeine Toxizität an. Des Weiteren wurde ein in vivo Test mit dem Bachflohkrebs Gammarus fossarum durchgeführt, bei dem Auswirkungen des Abwassers auf Verhalten und Mortalität untersucht wurden. Die Rohabwasserproben wurden auf unterschiedliche Weise aufbereitet und getestet. Sie wurden grob filtriert, steril filtriert, ultrazentrifugiert, mit DL-Cystein versetzt und ultrazentrifugiert kombiniert mit DL-Cystein-Zugabe. Die Ultrazentrifugation diente der Entfernung der Nanopartikel und DL-Cystein wurde zugegeben, um freie Silberionen zu komplexieren. Die Kombination von Ultrazentrifugation und Zugabe von DL-Cystein wurde durchgeführt, um eine Referenzprobe des Abwassers ohne Silber, weder partikuläres noch ionisches, zu erhalten. Zudem wurde eine Testreihe mit Silbernitrat durchgeführt. Beim Test mit Silbernitrat (1.5 μM, 255 μg·L-1) in einer 1:2 Verdünnungsreihe zeigte G. fossarum bereits nach 3 h eine erhöhte Mortalität, nach 24 h waren in allen Ansätzen alle Tiere tot. Die dem Algentest angepassten Effekt-Konzentrationen des Silbernitrats zeigten beim Leuchtbakterientest keine Effekte. V. fischeri ist demnach, im Vergleich zu P. subcapitata und G. fossarum deutlich weniger sensitiv gegenüber freien Silberionen. Am sensitivsten reagierte G. fossarum mit einer signifikant verringerten Bewegungsaktivität auf die Exposition gegenüber dem Rohabwasser. Es konnten bis zur 1:100 Verdünnung Effekte auf das Verhalten der Bachflohkrebse detektiert werden, wohingegen beim Algentest nur bis zur 1:16 Verdünnung und beim Leuchtbakterientest bis zur 1:64 Verdünnung Effekte auftraten. Die Ultrazentrifugation und/oder Zugabe von DL-Cystein verringerte die Toxizität des Abwassers bei allen Tests mehr oder weniger stark. Die hemmenden Effekte beim Algen- und Leuchtbakterientest verringerten sich durch Eliminierung von Silber signifikant um bis zu 10 %. Diese Abnahme der Toxizität durch das Entfernen des Silbers war beim Gammarus-Test viel deutlicher. Signifikante Verhaltensänderungen im Vergleich zur Kontrolle konnten bei den aufbereiteten Proben erst bei 1:20 verdünntem Abwasser detektiert werden, und nicht wie beim lediglich grob filtrierten Abwasser bereits ab 1:100 verdünntem Wäscherei-Abwasser. Vor allem der Algen- und der Leuchtbakterientest, aber auch der in vivo Test mit Gammarus fossarum zeigten, dass das Abwasser auch nach der vollständiger Entfernung des Silbers noch sehr toxisch ist. Die detektierten toxischen Effekte sind also nur z. T. auf das im Abwasser vorhandene Silber zurückzuführen.

Zur ökotoxikologischen Beurteilung der mit Epoxidharzen belasteten Trinkwasserproben wurden fünf Testsysteme angewandt: 1) Zur Beurteilung der Gesamttoxizität: Durchgeführt wurden ein akuter Daphnientest über die Dauer von 48 h mit dem Bachflohkrebs Daphnia magna, einem Standardtestorganismus in aquatischer Ökotoxikologie, und ein akuter Test mit dem Bachflohkrebs Gammarus fossarum über die Dauer von 7 d in Ergänzung. Diese rasch durchführbaren Screeningtests auf der Gesamtorganismusebene (Überleben, Verhalten) zeigen die integrierte Gesamttoxizität der Probe an, d.h. integrieren mehrere Wirkmechanismen. Endpunkte waren hierbei die Hemmung der Mobilität (D. magna) bzw. die Änderung der Bewegungs- und Ventilationsaktivität und die Mortalität (G. fossarum). 2) Um eine mögliche östrogene Wirkung der Proben abzuklären wurde mit einer Auswahl von Proben der ER-Calux-Test mit von menschlichen Zelllinien abgeleiteten Reportergen- Zellen durchgeführt. 3) Um eine evtl. auftretende Zytotoxizität abzuschätzen erfolgte mit der gleichen Auswahl an Proben das Zytotoxizitäts-Test-Kit PAN 1, in dem Auswirkungen der untersuchten Proben auf verschiedene Vitalitätsparameter von Säugetierzellen (Mäusefibroblasten) untersucht wurden. 4) Zur Abklärung einer möglichen mutagenen Wirkung der Proben wurde mit ausgewählten Proben ein Mutagenitätstest nach Ames mit dem Bakterium Salmonella typhimurium (Maron and Ames 1983) durchgeführt.

Zur ökotoxikologischen Beurteilung des Sickerwassers einer Deponie wurden drei Testsysteme angewandt. Um die Toxizität des Sickerwassers auf einzellige Grünalgen (planktonische Primärproduzenten) zu beurteilen, wurde ein kombinierter Algentest mit der Art Pseudokirchnerellia subcapitata durchgeführt. Ein akuter Toxizitätstest mit Bachflohkrebsen (Gammarus spp.), die als Zerkleinerer und Verwerter organischer Substanz (Destruenten) und als Beuteorganismus für Fische eine Schlüsselfunktion in Fliessgewässerökosystemen haben, diente zur Evaluation der Auswirkungen des Sickerwassers auf diese Organismen. Abschliessend wurden die chronischen Auswirkungen des Sickerwassers auf die Reproduktion und Mortalität der Cladocere Ceriodaphnia dubia untersucht, die als planktonischer Primärkonsument (u.a. von Grünalgen) und als wichtiger Beuteorganismus für Fische und andere Wasserlebewesen eine wichtige Rolle im stehenden Gewässerökosystem spielt. Das Sickerwasser wies weder akut noch chronisch eine Toxizität gegenüber den Testorganismen auf.

Die Vorversuche im halbtechnischen Massstab in der Versuchshalle der Eawag stehen im Kontrast zu den Ergebnissen der volltechnischen Umsetzung auf der Kläranlage Kloten/Opfikon. In den Versuchen mit der Pilotanlage konnte ein guter und hinreichender Rückhalt der PAK im Sandfilter (über 90% der PAK) sowohl bei der Dosierung mit 10mgPAK/l (ohne Flockung) als auch mit 20mgPAK/l (mit Flockung) erreicht werden. Im Gegensatz hierzu konnte der Rückhalt der Kohle (Dosierung 15mgPAK/l) in Kloten/Opfikon nicht zufriedenstellend erreicht werden. Unter Berücksichtigung des Feststoffabtriebes der Nachklärungen und der Dosierungen (PAK und Fällmittel) wurden nur rd. 80% der PAK bzw. der Feststoffe zurückgehalten und der Grenzwert von maximal 4mgTSS/l im Ablauf der Ara wurde deutlich nicht eingehalten.

Rédigé sur mandat du Service de l’environnement du canton de Fribourg (SEn) et du Service des eaux, sols et assainissement du canton de Vaud (SESA), le présent rapport a pour but d’étudier les raisons pour lesquelles la réduction des apports de phosphore semble ne pas avoir d’effets positifs sur les concentrations d’oxygène dans les eaux profondes du lac de Morat. Le phosphore (P) aboutit avant tout dans le lac par le biais de ses tributaires. Il convient de distinguer entre le phosphore inorganique dissous (PID), biodisponible – c’est-à-dire absorbable par les algues pour leur croissance –, et le phosphore total (Ptot), qui regroupe toutes les formes de P, organique et particulaire inclus. La majorité du phosphore entrant dans le lac est accumulée dans les sédiments e seule une faible partie en est exportée par son effluent.

Im Zuge der Erneuerung von Biologie und Filtration des Klärwerks Werdhölzli wird auch das biologische Reinigungsverfahren von einem konventionellen Belebtschlammverfahren zu einem A/I-Verfahren umgestellt. Diese Umstellung bringt bauliche Anpassungen der Becken mit sich. Anhand numerischer Strömungssimulationen, in der Folge CFD-Simulationen genannt, sollen die geänderten hydraulischen Eigenschaften der Becken im Hinblick auf das gewählte Verfahren untersucht werden. Auf Basis der Erkenntnisse werden bauliche und betriebliche Optimierungsmöglichkeiten abgeleitet. Die Arbeit ist in zwei Teile gegliedert. Zum einen wird die Nachbelüftung untersucht, zum andern der A/I-Reaktor.

In der vorliegenden Studie wurden der Verbleib und das Verhalten von Silberpartikeln in Belebtschlamm und in Abwasserreinigungsanlagen (ARA) untersucht. Das Projekt besteht aus drei Teilprojekten: (1) Hemmung der Nitrifikation im Belebtschlamm durch verschiedene Silberformen (2) Bilanzierung von Silber in einer Pilot-ARA (3) Vorkommen von Silber in einer realen ARA. In den Laborversuchen wurden marktübliche Silberadditive eingesetzt, die in der Industrie - vornehmlich im textilen Bereich - zur Anwendung kommen.

This subtask analyzes the wood-to-methane technology from an innovation perspective. The main concern is to identify the prerequisites in Switzerland for a potentially emerging field of wood-tomethane technology. The emergence and development of new technological fields is a complex, multi-faceted process. At the outset, it is highly uncertain whether a new technology will succeed, how and where it will be applied, how it will relate to established sectors, which kind of organizations will become involved or how business models will look like. Technology development and the emergence of related organizational and institutional structures is not only shaped by strategic decisions of innovators but also influenced by developments in a broader context beyond the immediate control of these actors. We shed light on context conditions (policy, institutions like rules of the game) and orientations of different actors. For a successful implementation of new technologies, it is important to have actors which are interested in the realization and operation of Bio-SNG plants. Against this background, possible business models have to be analyzed. Here, we underline the connection to the challenge of assuring a sufficient supply of wood for energy plants on the basis of wood. This is a core issue due to the situation that ongoing realizations of current large plants of wood combustion face the limits of regional wood availability. In order to study the development of new technological fields, a conceptual approach is needed that accounts for the complexity and non-linear nature of the underlying processes and the possibly large variety of different context developments.
