Julie Conrads

PhD Student

Department Aquatic Ecology

About Me

My name is Julie, and I am passionate about both exploring and studying aquatic environments. While I enjoy diving, especially when surround by coral reefs, my primary interest lies in the scientific understanding of freshwater ecosystems. In September 2024, I began my PhD, with a focus on the Quagga mussel and understanding the biology, ecology, and adaptive mechanisms of Quagga mussels in Swiss lakes.

Outside of my academic pursuits, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my golden retriever, Charlie, whether we are walking or simply enjoying time together.

Projects

Where do the quagga mussels in our lakes come from and how did they get here? Using state-of-the-art genomics, we trace their origins and uncover previously unknown intro-duction routes.
In late summer 2024, the quagga mussel was found in Lake Zurich for the first time we are documenting the invasion from day one and tracking how it is already changing the lake bottom.
Quagga mussels thrive at depths of over 200 meters but do they reproduce there too? We investigate whether deep-water populations are quietly fuelling the invasion.
