Climate and Societal Change (CASC)

The Climate and Societal Change Lab (CASC) investigates the psychological processes that shape human behavior in the context of climate change. Our research investigates how individuals and groups perceive, interpret, and act upon climate change, and how social systems and institutions shape these processes.
A complementary line of research addresses the role of science in society, particularly public trust in science, scientists’ engagement on climate issues, and climate change communication.
Rooted in environmental psychology, CASC’s mission is to advance psychological and interdisciplinary research to generate knowledge that informs evidence-based policymaking, fosters public engagement with science, and promotes behavioral action toward a sustainable future.
CASC alludes to cascades. This metaphor reflects CASC’s focus on understanding the dynamic relationships between climate change, science, and society, and on identifying pathways toward sustainable and equitable change.
