Regional Water Supply BL21: Hardwald, Basel

Drinking water in the canton of Basel-Landschaft is obtained exclusively from natural or artificially enriched groundwater. Despite the high population density, this is still possible today, but it poses large challenges for water suppliers, as there is considerable pressure on drinking water protection areas due to microbiological and chemical contamination. This necessitates sometimes drinking water treatment. In this interdisciplinary project, the water quality and origin of microorganisms and trace substances in various groundwater systems under different hydraulic conditions were investigated. Furthermore, the possibilities for further drinking water treatment in Hardwald were evaluated and analysed. As a result, mangement strategies were developed that the water supply can use to meet the upcoming challenges with the existing organisational structures.
