Postdoctoral Scientist

Department Environmental Toxicology

About Me

I am a postdoctoral researcher interested in exploring the potentials and limitations of applying machine learning (ML) to predict (eco)toxicological outcomes. This endeavor is part of the MLtox project associated with the Department Environmental Toxicology (UTOX) and the Department of Systems Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling (SIAM) at Eawag and in collaboration with the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC).
Further collaborations with a focus on neurotoxicity include the Medical University Innsbruck and the Peta Science Consortium International (PSCI) e.V. This part of my work is embedded within the EU PARC project.

Additionally, I work on establishing a collection of fish acute cell toxicity data (FACTdb) to provide a resource that strengthens the case for alternative in vitro methods in ecotoxicology and allows for the characterization of the applicability domain of the OECD Test Guideline 249, the RTgill-W1 fish cell line acute toxicity test developed at Eawag. More about the FACT database.

My PhD work at Goethe University (BMBF-funded project MiWa and PlaWes in the Department Aquatic Ecotoxicology) in Frankfurt/Germany focused on understanding the interactions of microplastics and aquatic invertebrates across levels of biological organization with Martin Wagner at NTNU Trondheim. Some of that research is still ongoing.

Projects

We use machine learning methods to predict the effects of chemicals on aquatic species.
PARC aims to adapt chemical risk assessment to the opportunities and needs of the 21st century.
The Fish Cell Acute Toxicity (FACT) database is a comprehensive collection of fish cell viability data related to chemicals and in line with the OECD Test Guideline 249.
